Posterolateral Corner (PLC) Injuries

What is the PLC?

The PLC stabilizes the outer-back part of the knee, preventing excessive external rotation and varus movement. Injuries often occur alongside ACL or PCL injuries, making diagnosis challenging.

Symptoms

  • Severe instability, especially during lateral movements.
  • Swelling and pain on the outer knee.
  • Difficulty bearing weight.

Diagnosis

  1. Physical Examination:
    • Dial Test: Checks for excessive external rotation at 30° and 90° flexion.
    • Varus Stress Test: Identifies instability on the outer knee.
  2. Imaging:
    • MRI: For soft tissue injuries.
    • Stress X-Rays: To quantify instability.

Treatment

  • Non-Surgical (Minor injuries):
    • Physiotherapy and bracing.
  • Surgical (Severe injuries):
    • Repair or reconstruction of PLC structures.
