Labral Tears

What Is Labral Tears

The labrum is a ring of cartilage around the acetabulum that provides stability and cushioning. Tears can result from trauma, repetitive movements, or underlying hip deformities (e.g., FAI).

Symptoms

  • Sharp, stabbing pain in the groin or outer hip.
  • Locking, clicking, or catching sensation during movement.
  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion.

Diagnosis

  • Physical Examination: Pain elicited by hip flexion and rotation.
  • MRI with Contrast: Gold standard for detecting labral tears.

Treatment

  • Non-Surgical:
  • Rest and activity modification.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Physical therapy for muscle strengthening.
  • Surgical:
  • Arthroscopic labral repair or debridement.
