Patella Instability

What Is Patella Instability

Patella instability occurs when the kneecap dislocates or maltracks, often due to anatomical factors or ligament weakness.

Symptoms

  • Visible dislocation or malalignment.
  • Pain, swelling, and reduced range of motion.
  • Recurring instability during activities.

Diagnosis

  • Physical exam for patellar tracking.
  • MRI to assess ligament damage.

Treatment

  • Non-Surgical:
    • Strengthening exercises for quadriceps and VMO (vastus medialis oblique).
    • Bracing or taping for stabilization.
  • Surgical (for recurrent dislocations):
    • MPFL Reconstruction.
    • Tibial tubercle osteotomy for realignment.
