What is Trochanteric Bursitis?

Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation of the bursa (fluid-filled sac) over the greater trochanter of the femur. It is a common cause of lateral hip pain.

Symptoms

  • Pain on the outer hip, worsened by lying on the affected side.
  • Tenderness over the greater trochanter.
  • Stiffness or pain during activities like climbing stairs.

 

Diagnosis

  • Physical Examination: Point tenderness over the trochanter.
  • Ultrasound or MRI: To confirm bursa inflammation.

 

Treatment

  • Rest and avoidance of aggravating activities.
  • NSAIDs for pain relief.
  • Physical therapy to address muscle imbalances.
  • Corticosteroid injections for persistent symptoms.
